If you look at your household from the gate of your house, which god is your family serving?
“Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:14-15)
Every family and household must decide and choose for themselves concerning who they will serve – Yehovah, idols of the world, or a god of their own making in the image of their lusts.
“Now when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people assembled about Aaron and said to him, “Come, make us a god who will go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” Aaron said to them, “Tear off the gold rings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” Then all the people tore off the gold rings which were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. He took this from their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool and made it into a molten calf; and they said, “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.” Now when Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD.” So the next day they rose early and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.” (Exodus 32:1-6)
“And I saw that you had indeed sinned against the LORD your God. You had made for yourselves a molten calf; you had turned aside quickly from the way which the LORD had commanded you.” (Deuteronomy 9:16)
In today’s postmodernist culture of Babylon the great, the true image of God has been made into the likeness of the golden calf. Some see a deified image crafted by man-pleasing preachers while others see godly forms in the image of their desires; some see divinity in gold while others see wealth; some see mystic spirituality in calves while others see hedonistic providence. As a result of seeing what is right in their own sight, many families are serving, and revolving their lives around, the golden calf rather than the true God. They build family altars around the golden calf, offer themselves as living sacrifices to it, and redefine their lives and culture around it, while thinking that they are worshipping the true God who saved them.
“Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people did not answer him a word.” (1 Kings 18:21)
Indeed, which god we choose to follow would depend on our opinions of who the true god is. We cannot choose the true God and worship Him unless we know who the true God is, what the image of His holiness truly looks like, and what service of worship He truly requires of us. In other words, our opinions or belief systems, individually or as a household, will determine who we choose, what we worship, and how we behave.
“Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”” (Matthew 16:13-17)
This was the reason why Jesus asked His disciples to define who He was; for unless they knew exactly who He was, they would not be able to choose Him, respond to Him, or serve Him accurately. If they thought that Jesus was just one of the prophets or prosperity teachers, they would treat Him as just one of the many prophets or prosperity teachers, not as the Messiah, the Son of the living God.
It is, therefore, important to consider who the true God is, and what worshipping the true God as a household truly means; else we will find ourselves serving the gods of the land, or even self.
Who is your family serving today?
